In April of 2010 my husband and I impulse-bought a thirteen-foot 1978 Scamp travel trailer we found on Craigslist. Over the course of three months we tore out the shag carpeting and stripped her down to her fiberglass shell, replaced the dodgy water and electrical systems, reupholstered the Elvis-inspired cushions, put down a bamboo floor, and finally exorcised the funky smell of mothballs and disco with a few coats of latex paint. We called the Scamp home for some five thousand circuitous miles between the desert of Southern California and the coast of Down East Maine. The entire enterprise may just be the best worst idea we've ever had. Posts of the restoration below; posts on The Great American Road Trip here.
