ToyCamera Wins Again

{The Great American Road Trip via iPhone}

I finally got around to uploading my iPhone pictures onto my computer. And forgot I’d documented our road trip in the Scamp with my favorite camera app, ToyCamera. So two things. One: Can we talk about how some of these pictures -that I took with a cell phone- turned out better than the ones I shot with an expensive digital SLR? I don’t know if I should be excited or depressed about that. Two: I’m not going to lie, guys; these pictures make me really homesick. And miss the doggies. And crave bacon. Not that this whole India thing isn’t a rollicking adventure and good for our marriage and careers, but still. I’m allowing myself fifteen minutes of solitary, wallowing, inconsolable homesickness.

P.S.  For you newcomers, now’s probably a good time to introduce the four-leggeds: The Welsh corgi is Mac but everyone calls him Biscuit. He was one of our family dogs but I dognapped him my senior year in college and he hasn’t left my side since. When he’s not incredibly well-behaved he’s incredibly naughty. You wouldn’t know it by looking at him, but shorty can catch and kill snakes, lizards, and mice. Which he then eats. Whole.

The spotted one is Dolly, aka the Hound of Love. She is *not* a Dalmatian. She’s an English-pointer-Lab mix from the Joshua Tree pound. Dolly is a Wedding Dog; we rescued her after we got hitched and moved to the desert. (I highly recommend Wedding Dogs, if anyone's asking.) She heals weary human hearts with her gentleness, affection and joie de vivre.

We sold them both for cash money to pay for our plane tickets to India. Just kidding. They’re on the farm in New Jersey with dear old mom and dad.

  2. It's ok to allow yourself a bit of wallowing and pity/homesickness at times.

  3. First of all, I cannot believe those are iPhone photos - no way! Second, it's totally understandable to be homesick, especially with those cute little faces peeking at you in that photo! I'm sure they're having a grand time with Lemon down on the farm!
I wish I could send you some bacon! xoxo

  4. The new iphone 4 takes awesome pictures! I use it when when I don't want to lug around the my Rebel Canon XTI. What photo applications do you use?

Don't be home sick, you are an adventure of a life time.

  7. I wish you would not joke about these things, LILY.

I have decided to (quite selflessly, might I add) eat some bacon in your stead. It will happen tomorrow at approx 9:17 a.m. EDT. I will open the window and waft the essence in your specific direction.

  8. This is my first time commenting - I love your blog!

India has many many wonderful sights, sounds, smells and tastes - but you're right, no bacon is huge!

And I would miss my pets like mad too.

  9. Ain't Amerika grand! Makes me want to go on a road trip, again. I'm homesick for you, for the road, for your lovely doggies. Heading south to Memphis, then north through the Smokies in another month, but still. India is an adventure, and so far far away. Hang in there, dear girl. Your posts keep us all close, so get busy. Idle hands and all that.

  10. Can I just point out that I don't capture shots like that with my iPhone? That talent is all YOU lady. You'd be awesome with a pinhole camera.

And everybody needs a little homesickness now and then. Even 10 years on. xoxo

  12. Bacon and pups. Pretty much guaranteed to bring on a bad spate of homesickness, no matter how awesome a time you are having elsewhere. They should put warning labels on them.

  14. My photos never turn out well on my iphone, perhaps it's time I try out one of these photo apps.
Your pups are adorable. Love the photo of them sleeping next to each other. Can't wait to read more about life in India!

  16. wow. Fab pictures. Apple rocks, as always.
I understand you feel homesick. No matter how wonderful the place where you are is, there is no place like home, right? Especially if two doggies are included.

  17. Those shots are ridiculously gorgeous. Even if you're having amazing adventures, being homesick totally makes sense, particularly if you love home. And honestly, that first bite of bacon will be so much better because of its absence in your life this year.

  20. Are you working for apple too? Because you should get some kick-backs from all the app purchases from this post alone...

Made me tear up because I just know you must be missing those four-legged loves! My heart would be broken without my puglet in my lap {constantly}.

  21. Thanks for the encouragement, muggles!

Erika- I have Camera Bag, Hipstamatic and a few others but I keep reverting back to ToyCamera (on Vintage Warm mode with vignetting on) because it's the bomb dot com.

Stephanie- You're the sweetest. Yeah, this year is all about The Marriage. We spent two separate 7-month stints apart between when we got engaged and our first wedding anniversary. So yeah, this year is all about being. together. finallllly.

Amanda, and all the other bacon-lovers: mmmmm.

Mel- I know, the dog-missing is KILLING me. But not inhibiting my falling in love with India. So far.

  23. i agree with stephanie, i like it when people talk about things being good for their marriages--or just their marriages in general, because sometimes those things just don't get talked about. and i'm SO GLAD that this trip is good for yours! because good marriages are GOOD.
and of course you are homesick! especially for doggies and bacon. your photos are pretty darn cool, too. they make me homesick for the mountains. but you're already a quarterish of the way through! time flies, doesn't it?!
