We're Moving

{To India}

I know. I can't believe it either. A year ago P. and I half-jokingly wondered, what if we put everything in storage and moved to India for a year? Six months ago we both applied for grants and residencies there, because why not keep our options open. A few days ago P. got a big envelope in our rusted mailbox at the end of our dirt road, and inside was a letter from the grant people saying, hey, we're funding your project and you need to be in Delhi in *August.*

So we're moving to India in two and a half months, and we'll stay the better part of a year.  P. is going to learn about clean water delivery and I have a painting residency. The doggies will stay with Ma and Pa Stockman on the farm back in New Jersey, where they can square off against foxes instead of coyotes. Provided we finish the restoration and make the trip back east in one piece, the Scamp will live in the barn. Everything else will go in storage. And that's how we're moving to India: just. like. that.

[Insert squeal of total panic/ utter excitement here.]

  8. Thanks for all the encouragement, muffins! There will be tears when we leave our wee house and our wonderful friends in the desert, but it's time for new adventures (or at least, that's the attitude I've decided to stick with). Will definitely be blogging like a fiend from over there and can't w a i t for the shock of color and culture to inspire a new direction in my painting. Purdy excited.

    Be warned though: your 1 year could turn into more so easily. My 1 year in Japan turned into 7 just like that :)

  21. That's just miraculous! The grants, the opportunity, the kismet. India is my Harold and Maude-ish grandmother's favorite place in the world. I'll buy your first painting of the Ganges for the g-ma.

  25. The world is a bouquet ready for the picking. Go get em girlfriend. I want more homesteads before you move on to bigger and better subjects, but they seem to be plucked before I have the chance. So lucky for you and yours to make every opportunity count. Wonderful adventures await, and again, blessings rain down.

  30. Can I admit that my excitement over this is mostly selfish? And wanna know why? I am so FREAKING excited to see you in a new place, look at your pictures and your paintings and see what you write about. You will go and curate the whole of India for our reading-listening-viewing pleasure. So yes, HIGHLY excited. Big congratulations to you and to Stockman-comma-P.

    Also: I'm pretty sure Biscuit wants to vacation in the temperate Bay Area climate while you're gone. We lack coyotes AND foxes, but we have some feral cats that have bulked up of late and become pretty complacent about the general state of affairs. If there's corgin (corgin-e?) squaring off to be done, it's only fair to consider your neighbor to the north...

  31. Hello I just read this a bit late. I was in India last year and I loved Jaipur the most of any city I went too (only a few but still). I actually remember thinking to myself, gee I think I could live here for a while... have fun!
